At Wieser Tamás, the leather comes first. Before a single piece is made, there is the hide, and the search for hides worth making anything from at all. This is what defines us: a collection of rare, characterful, often irreplaceable leathers, sought out from tanneries around the world and gathered nowhere else. Some are made in tiny quantities; some are no longer produced anywhere on earth. Finding them, and choosing them, is the heart of what we do.

This is where those materials speak for themselves. Each hide is chosen not for convenience but for character, the way a leather ages, holds a mould, takes the light, and earns its place in a piece meant to last. Every leather in this book carries its own story: the animal, the tannery, the method, the hands that finished it. All are selected for the work we do in the atelier.

Exotics

No two exotic hides are ever the same. Every scale pattern is unique, giving each finished piece its own character.

Our collection includes crocodile, alligator, Python, Brazilian pirarucu, and ostrich, sourced from some of the world's most respected tanneries. Each leather is chosen for its natural texture, durability, and the way it works in the hands of the craftsman.

Working with exotic leather requires precision. Every cut is planned around the pattern of the hide so its natural beauty is preserved in the finished piece.

Tannery Specific

Shell Cordovan is one of the rarest and most sought-after leathers in the world, crafted from the dense shell beneath the horsehide rather than the outer grain. We source our Shell Cordovan from Horween Leather Company in Chicago and Shinki Hikaku in Himeji, Japan, two tanneries renowned for preserving this highly specialized craft. Each shell is slowly vegetable tanned, hot-stuffed with natural oils and waxes, and carefully hand-finished over a period of several months, resulting in a leather of exceptional density, rich lustre, and remarkable durability. Unlike traditional leather, Shell Cordovan develops smooth rolls rather than creases, acquiring a deep, distinctive patina with age.

Böle Tannery est. 1899

Böle Tannery's spruce bark leather is defined by patience: the hides spend up to twelve months soaking in open vats, tanned by nothing more than Pite river water and spruce bark flakes. It is a technique 1000 years old, practiced by Böle for generations.

Rather than rushing the hides through a chemical bath in hours, Böle gave them a full twelve months, moving them slowly through a chain of vats from weaker to ever stronger bark concentrations, stirred daily and shifted by hand so the surface was never marked. Only the best Swedish cattle hides earned that year in the river; the bark was harvested when the sap rose in May and June; the water came straight from the Pite running past the tannery.

The result is a leather so unique and so rare it can be found nowhere else in the world than in our showroom.

Bark Tanning

Oak bark tanning is one of the oldest and slowest methods of tanning leather, relying solely on natural tannins extracted from oak bark. We work with traditional tanneries in Sweden and United Kingdom, where this centuries-old craft has been preserved for generations. There, each hide spends more than a year slowly absorbing the tannins, developing exceptional strength, depth, and longevity while preserving its natural character.

We work with three oak bark tanned leathers, each selected for its unique qualities. Russian Leather is recognised by its distinctive cross-hatched grain and natural birch oils, developing a rich patina and remarkable depth over time. Bridle Leather is nourished with natural tallows and waxes, creating a dense, durable leather that is ideal for our wet-shaped pieces, allowing each form to be moulded by hand while retaining its structure. Waxed Calf offers a smooth, refined grain with a lightly waxed finish, combining everyday durability with a subtle lustre that becomes more beautiful with age.
